The Delphi Group has been working on behalf of CN Rail to update the Modal Shift Offset Quantification Protocol approved in Alberta for submission to additional offset systems.

The Modal Shift protocol details how to generate offset credits by shifting freight from truck to rail. These offsets can be generated because shipping by rail has significantly lower associated greenhouse gas emissions than shipping by truck.

The future goal of Delphi and CN is to get the protocol approved in other North American offset systems that will allow protocol users (project proponents) to capitalize on longer distance shipments, thereby increasing the potential for offset credit generation.
